The Band
2001/2002
the band was working on their fourth full lenght album 'songs for the exhausted'.
It took them more than 6 month to finish the recordings in naked lunch bassplayer
herwig's own studio in klagenfurt. the mixes were done at the skyline-studios in düsseldorf.
just a few festival-shows were played, but the band followed an invitation that took them to play some gigs in moscow and st.petersburg (russia).
former drummer, peter, left the band to live in america.
the band is now a three-piece again.
1990
Naked Lunch, from the Austrian town of Klagenfurt, give their first performances
as support to the Screaming Trees. The band do what has to be done; write songs
and spend most of their time in the rehearsal room. In November, the first demos
emerge.
1991
The German indie guitar label, Big Store notice the band and soon thereafter
release the mini-album "Naked". Extensive touring with Seattle's "Tad"
and Biele-feld's "Speedniggs" follow. The band also develop a strong
fan- base in Germany.
1992
Big Store release the album "Balsam". A lengthy tour follows with
label mates "The Notwist". Due to positive press reaction and acceptance
in the then lively Fanzine- Scene, Naked Lunch are in the position to headline
their own club tour.
1993
A lengthy tour is also scheduled this year. Grant Hart's "Nova Mob and
England's "Neds Atomic Dustbin" get it on with the Austrians. In between,
smaller clubs are played again. In the summer Naked Lunch play their first bigger
festivals.
1994
The first demos for the new album are created. The band hang around in England,
play small clubs and discover "Brit-Pop". The result: Oliver Welter
(vocals/guitar) and Herwig Zamernik (Bass) go to the barbers, while Peter Hornbogner
(drums) holds back on his golden locks. At this time, no one could predict that
it would be three years until a new album would be released.
1995
In their home town, the band gets to know their future manager for England.
A friendship forms and he gets right into the new Naked Lunch recordings. He
succeeds, in a very short time, to evoke interest in the band, from many British
A&Rs. He stages showcases in London and an extended stay in England. In
December, the band impress as support for Therapy? In the meantime another video
is filmed in Sao Paulo. At the same time, Mercury Records win the bid to get
the new Naked Lunch album.
1996
As a sign of goodwill, WOM, in their "Limited and Exclusive" series,
release a 4-track CD including the hit "Tambourine" from the forthcoming
album, the highlight of their concerts, the ballad "Orange Dolphins"
and the rockin' "Gimme' Shelter" and Army of Lovers cover, "Obsession".
In keeping with the motto "money is for spending", the further production
is undertaken in Weilheim, San Francisco and New York with Alan Moulder and
Roli Mosimann. With these actions the band and their long-term producer and
friend Olaf O.P.A.L become closer and a new chapter begun.
1997
It should be Naked Lunch's year. The band move to England. With great expectations,
Mercury work on the album release. The majority of people do not understand
the irony of the album's title, "Superstardom". Despite this, fans
and critics are impressed by the music. But it doesn't help. The tour through
all the established German clubs in the Autumn, should be the last for 20 months.
At the end, there was just enough cash left for the return home.
1998
Naked Lunch look for new management and record new demos. Producer O.P.A.L is
activated and ideas bubble. The band book the Skyline Studio in Dusseldorf for
two months. Recording day and night. Wind player, percussionist and key- boarder
Stefan Deissenberger hangs around the studio. Following; mixing in Uphon Studio,
Weilheim. Full of suspense, the now matured pop band hand over the album to
their record company. The house is enthusiastic. In order to satisfy the live
urge, the band undertake a tour of Austria. All clubs are sold out. The band
and the fans get it on. It is noted with great relief, that Austria's greatest
guitar band have not yet reached their "sell- by- date".
1999
At the end of April the album "Love Junkies" is released on Mercury.
The band is again drawn towards the clubs and festival stages throughout the
country. In April they support Belgiums dEUS on their tour through Germany and
Austria. The first single "Closed Today" enter the German club-charts.
They play an extensive tour in September and October after leaving their record
company Mercury. Only some weeks later they sign to Community/Virgin. While
presenting their new single "Disco Sadness" a video-clip of the re-released
first single "Closed today" hit Viva2 rotation. In december they play
some additional shows in Germany.
2001
The band is working on their forthcoming album Loss' in their own studio
in Klagenfurt. The album will be released in autumn 2002.
